One group that is beginning to catch the attention of listeners worldwide is the self proclaimed 'global girl group' XG.
The group debuted under XGALX in March of 2022. While the group promoted in South Korea, the members Jurin, Chisa, Cocona, Hinata, Maya, Juria, and Harvey are actually all Japanese. To further reach audiences across the globe, the group also sings in English.
The group debuted with the single, Tippy Toes. While the title may seem a little elementary, this track actually brings copious amounts of attitude and confidence to the table.
This sharp and precise song immediately engages the ear, and the choreography is smooth and incredibly synchronized. Although this debut earned a whopping 23 million Youtube views in only 10 months, XG grew even more popular with their second single Mascara.
In just 7 months, Mascara has earned over 40 million views on YouTube and over 30 million streams on Spotify.
Even with girl groups dominating the resent charts, these stats are highly uncharacteristic for a group that promotes outside of the Big 3 and HYBE.
This track is an absolute monster. It's fast-paced, bass heavy, and highly addictive. Partnering all of that with a message of self empowerment immediately set this release up for success.
Simply put, fans can't get enough of this song.
Many groups would have been easily intimidated by their second single reaching new heights so quickly. Instead of bending to the pressure, XG continued to produce hard hitting singles.
The group's third single Shooting Star gained nearly 20 million views in only three weeks. Again, this track is incredible dynamic in rhythm and overall sound.
Additionally, it's extremely refreshing to see a group sing about something other than romantic relationships. Shooting Star is a prediction of the group's success. Within this, it's also super obvious that the girls are having an absolute blast as they get to pursue their dreams.
By using highly rhythmic, rap centered tracks, XG is releasing a much grittier sound compared to their Korean counterparts such as New Jeans and Le Sserafim. This group has one of the best rap lines out of all of the girl groups currently promoting
With most of their songs being full of attitude and confidence, XG did release a song with a lighter sound.
Leaning a little closer to R&B, Left Right is the group's newest track. This song is slower, softer, and different than the other songs they've released.
XG are proving that they are versatile and experimental while still staying true to an original sound. While the song is a stand out when compared to their other releases, the bass line and lyrical flow are still very characteristic of the group.
Even though XG has only released 4 songs as of now, I would be shocked to see a decline in their popularity. These girls have a fresh and addictive sound, and they'll go far as long as their company continues to build upon their current platform.
Depending on the steady increase of their success, XG truly has the potential to inspire a new wave of girl groups world wide.
